International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a two-year program offered by International Baccalaureate (IB) a worldwide, nonprofit foundation that offers high quality and challenging educational programmes for students aged 3 to 19. IB diploma programs develop student’s intellectual, emotional, personal and social skills.
3 Components of IB DP
The IBDP Programme is a pre-university qualification that comprises 3 core components:-
Theory of Knowledge
It is a mandatory subject that encourages critical thinking and develops exceptional knowledge and understanding of the learning process that can be applied to various subjects. It is evaluated through an oral presentation and a 1,600-word essay. It asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know.
Extended Essay
The student has to write an extended essay on the topic which interests them in 4,000-word based on research. The extended essay is mandatory for all students.
Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)
Student have to document a project (minimum of one month’s duration) to showcase their participation in various experiences with a reasonable balance between creativity (including arts, and experiences that involve creative thinking), activity(physical action necessary to achieve a healthy lifestyle), and service (helping community)
Details of Other Subjects in IB DP
It also has six broad subject groups which students have to choose to develop specialised knowledge and skills in topics that interest them the most.
Students have to choose subject groups from
- Language and Literature
- Language Acquisition
- Individuals and Societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- Arts
Students can opt for additional subjects from the same groups instead of arts.
Students have to take some subjects at a higher level (HL) which take 240 teaching hours and some at a standard level (SL)which take up to 150 teaching hours. Each student has to take at least 3 but not more than 4 subjects at a higher level, and the remaining at a standard level.
What is the eligibility for an International Baccalaureate Diploma program?
IB DP is mainly for students who have passed high school (between 16 and 19) years.
What are the requirements of IB School in Singapore?
- Some schools may have GPA requirements
- Students interested in joining the IB program need to submit an application before the due date, which can be either enquired through school counsellors or can be checked on their school’s website
- Applications require teacher recommendation letters, grade reports, essays, vaccination reports and a list of extracurricular activities reports.
